Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapy for Kids
Unique brains need unique support.
Support should fit your child—not the other way around.
Some kids experience the world more intensely.
Loud feelings. Constant movement. Sensory sensitivities. Impulsive reactions. Difficulty with transitions. Social challenges. Explosive meltdowns. Anxiety. Frustration that seems to go from 0 to 100.
For neurodivergent kids, everyday expectations can sometimes ask more of their nervous system than they are able to give.
At Sarah Whitney Family and Child Therapy, we provide neurodiversity-affirming therapy for kids and families in Rocklin, California. We help kids better understand themselves, build skills that actually work for their brains, and feel successful without being asked to change who they are.

Your child doesn’t need a formal diagnosis to benefit from neurodiversity-affirming support.
Sometimes you simply know that your child experiences the world differently—and the strategies that seem to work for everyone else aren’t working for them.
Therapy That Works With Your Child’s Brain
Nervous System First
Before we expect a child to problem-solve, communicate, or "make a better choice," we look at regulation. We help kids recognize what their body needs and build ways to regulate that actually work for them.
Behavior is Communication
We get curious about what is happening underneath the behavior. Avoidance, meltdowns, aggression, shutting down, or impulsivity aren't the whole story. They are informing us about what a child is struggling to manage.
Skills without Shame
We work on flexibilty, communication, emotional regulation, problem-solving, boundaries, and accountability without teaching kids that their brain is the problem.
Environmental Support
Sometimes the child isn't the only one who needs support. We look at expectations, routines, sensory demands, school environments, and other factors that may be creating unnecessary barriers and help families figure out what can change.
Self-Understanding and Advocacy
We help kids develop language for how their brain works, recognize what they need, communicate those needs, and build a sense of self that isn't rooted in feeling like they're always getting it wrong.
Affirming Doesn't Mean Ignoring the Hard Stuff
Neurodiversity-affirming therapy isn't about removing expectations or avoiding discomfort.
Kids still need support learning how to navigate frustration, respect boundaries, repair after conflict, tolerate things they can't control, communicate what they need, and take responsibility for their actions.
The difference is that we don't start from "How do we make this behavior stop?"
We start with "What's making this hard and what does this child need in order to handle it differently?"
Your child doesn't have to fit the strategy.
We can find strategies that fit your child.
