Teen Therapy

At Sarah Whitney Marriage and Family Therapy, we specialize in adolescent therapy and are passionate about supporting today’s youth. Teens face more challenges than ever before—social media, academic pressure, identity exploration, and mental health struggles—and these pressures are taking a measurable toll. Our mission is to be a trusted ally for teens, providing a safe space that fosters empowerment, self-awareness, and emotional well-being.

Our therapists understand the complexities of modern adolescence. In a world dominated by screens and constant digital connection, we help teens develop tools to reconnect—with themselves, their peers, and their families. Through evidence-based approaches and genuine connection, we guide teens in understanding holistic wellness and embracing their unique identity.

Our goal is to help teens:

  • Cultivate Self-Love

  • Understand and Manage Emotions

  • Build Healthy Relationships and Communication Skills

  • Discover Inner Strength and Resilience

As a group therapy practice, we offer comprehensive support to both teens and their parents. While we maintain strict confidentiality in our therapeutic relationships with adolescents, we also recognize the importance of family involvement. Our therapists are skilled in balancing teen privacy with collaborative parent support, ensuring that the entire family system is part of the healing process when appropriate.

If you’re seeking teen counseling or family therapy in Roseville, CA our team is here to help your family thrive.

Grief Counseling

At Sarah Whitney Marriage and Family Therapy, we know that grief and loss can feel overwhelming, especially for children and families. Whether your family is coping with the death of a loved one, a major life transition, or an unexpected loss, you don’t have to face it alone. Grief is deeply personal—no two experiences are alike. That’s why our therapists provide compassionate, individualized grief counseling tailored to the unique needs of every child and family.

Too often, society expects us to move on quickly after a loss, leaving little time or space to feel, process, or understand our pain. This can be especially difficult for children and teens, who may not yet have the words or tools to express their emotions. We believe everyone deserves the time and support to heal in their own way.

Grief is layered and complex, and may include:

  • Anger over the unfairness of the situation

  • Deep sorrow about the permanence of the loss

  • Confusion after a traumatic or sudden event

  • Desperation to hold on to what’s been lost

  • Fear of an unfamiliar future

  • Loneliness and isolation

  • Guilt about moving forward

Our clinicians specialize in working with children, adolescents, and families who are grieving. We understand how hard it can be to know what to say—or how to help—when a child is struggling with loss. Our role is to create a safe, supportive space for children to express their emotions, ask questions, and build resilience.

We offer grief counseling for children and families navigating:

  • Death of a Loved One

  • Chronic or Terminal Illness

  • Divorce or Separation

  • Loss of Custodial Time

  • Moving or Relocation

  • Infertility and Pregnancy Loss

  • A Loved One’s Addiction

  • A Loved One’s Mental Illness

  • Loss of Friendship or Important Relationship

  • Major Personal Changes or Transitions

If your family is facing grief, we are here to help. Our team provides grief therapy for kids and teens that is developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed, and rooted in empathy and healing. Whether your child needs a space to talk, play, cry, or be understood—we’re here to support them every step of the way.

Child Therapy

We are seeing an increase in behavioral challenges, emotional dysregulation, and impulsivity with kids. There are many cultural and environmental influences that are making it challenging for kids to just be kids.

At Sarah Whitney Family and Child Therapy, our intention is to provide support that is mindful and aware of the specific challenges children are facing today and aimed towards getting kids back to the freedom and beauty of childhood. Children are our future and deserve the best care.

Our clinicians will work individually with the child to provide safety, encouragement, guidance, and tools to support their unique needs. We want kids from an early age to feel competent that they have everything they need to thrive.

With a strong focus on nervous system and emotional regulation skills, kids will practice and implement skills that will continue to be useful throughout development and across different life experiences. We will work alongside our clients to expand their emotional vocabulary and understanding. Our therapists will assist children on building a strong connection with themselves through attunement and awareness activities. Our approach incorporates therapeutic play, bibliotherapy, psychoeducation, and regulation skill building.

Providing a safe place for kids to express, feel, and learn is of the upmost importance. With a welcoming, accepting, and nurturing environment; we hope that therapy and healing will be experienced as safe and natural.

Support will be provided to parents and caregivers as needed. We are mindful that a child is a part of family system. Sometimes for change to be effective or even possible, caregivers must be involved in treatment. Our clinicians will assess each family's individual needs on a case-by-case basis and communicate directly with family members what they can anticipate of their involvement. Participation with other family members may look like individual counseling, psycho-education, therapeutic play with the parents/caregivers, family therapy, co-parenting counseling and/or referrals to other resources or providers.

Therapy can help children with the following:

- Divorce, Separate Households

-Blended Families

-New Siblings, Sibling Conflict

-Adoption

-Grief or Loss

-Parental Illness

-Social Skills

-Emotional Regulation

-Self- Esteem

LGBTQIA+ Affirming Therapy

Empowered to Be Unapologetically You

At Sarah Whitney Family and Child Therapy, we believe everyone deserves a space where they can show up exactly as they are — without fear, judgment, or the need to explain their identity. Our LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy offers that space: a place to explore who you are, process life’s challenges, and build confidence in living authentically.

In our sessions, we work alongside clients to understand the experiences that have shaped them — whether that includes identity exploration, coming out, navigating family or relationship stress, or coping with discrimination and rejection. Our goal is to help you strengthen self-acceptance, set healthy boundaries, and cultivate relationships that honor your truth.

Our approach is compassionate, inclusive, and identity-affirming, grounded in the belief that healing happens when you feel safe to be your full self. We draw from strengths-based, trauma-informed, and relational approaches to support you in rewriting unhelpful narratives and discovering the power of your voice.

You don’t have to walk this journey alone. Whether you’re seeking clarity, connection, or simply a place to feel seen and supported — we’re here to walk beside you as you embrace your authentic self and build a life filled with pride, purpose, and belonging.
